Here are the lists!

Okay, the following posts will be everyone's lists. Take a look. Everyone did a great job--lots of interesting picks. There actually wasn't that much overlap, so you'll want to see what everyone chose because we all have a lot of music that won't make it into the playoffs. Also, feel free to comment on one another's lists (i.e. I completely forgot that album. What a great choice!orWhat were you smoking when you picked that?)

Here are a few things I noticed on first looking at them:

1. Again, not much overlap. Certain artists do show up quite a bit, but often people have chosen different albums. Nick Cave is popular among us, but apparently we can't agree on one recording. Same for Dylan (but how do you choose one Dylan album?).

2. Some went for mostly new stuff, some for mostly classics. Some of us went for a mix. It will be interesting to see if newbies or classics win out in the end.

3. It seems like a quite a few of number one picks don't show up on any one else's lists. Weird, huh?

4. I will say that it feels a little bizarro to have Ladies and Gentlmen on MVB's list, (and not on mine) and Houses of the Holy on mine (and not on his).

Okay, I believe Karl is now going to figure out how to get the top 64 albums out of these lists.

  1. WONDERFUL purple lightening "Music Death Match" image.

  2. Okay, I did NOT realize Bruce had created the image. Wasn't just trying to celebrate his major achievement. Also, lightning.

  3. Okay, I've made good progress on canonicalization -- mostly just optional "The"s, and some punctuation and special non Latin letters. To whet your appetite, here are the bands with 3 or more mentions:

    8 Spiritualized
    6 Rolling Stones
    6 Radiohead
    6 Luna
    6 Bob Dylan
    5 Wilco
    5 U2
    5 Sufjan Stevens
    5 Bjork
    4 Yo La Tengo
    4 Weakerthans
    4 The Kinks
    4 Sigur Ros
    4 Broken Social Scene
    4 Beck
    3 White Stripes
    3 Weezer
    3 Tom Waits
    3 The New Pornographers
    3 The Band
    3 Stone Roses
    3 Smashing Pumpkins
    3 Red House Painters
    3 Portishead
    3 Pink Floyd
    3 Passion Pit
    3 Nick Drake
    3 Neko Case
    3 Mercury Rev
    3 Magnetic Fields
    3 M.I.A.
    3 Low
    3 Led Zeppelin
    3 His Name Is Alive
    3 Flaming Lips
    3 Explosions in the Sky
    3 Cat Power
    3 Beatles
    3 Beach Boys
    3 Air

Actually, I'm considering changing the ranking function to include the popularity of the band separately from the popularity of the album. If a prolific artist is mentioned many times, but each time a different album, it would be unfair if *none* of those albums made it to the tourney.
